34% Approval or Not… and the Port Deal

Anybody spending a couple minutes reading the news is seeing the latest CBS polls about president bush admid the uproar about DP World taking control of some U.S ports….
The CBS Poll found Bush has a 34 percent approval rating and a 59 percent disapproval rating… the numbers behind the pole.. however are revealing…

“Total Republicans” contacted: 272 unweighted and 289 weighted.
“Total Democrats” contacted: 409 unweighted and 381 weighted.
“Total Independents” contacted: 337 unweighted and 348 weighted.

Also note: CBS failed to report that 66 percent of respondents thought the media devoted “too much time” to Cheney’s hunting accident.

The Pew Research Center for the People and the Press has a helpful table in this report on what percentage of Americans consider themselves to be Republican or Democrat. It shows that in both 2004 and 2005, 30% said they were Republican compared to 33% who said they were Democrats. The new CBS poll (even after being weighted) had a population of only 28% Republicans to 37% Democrats.

This is very very naughty CBS.. but hey.. what can you expect they do a lot of manipulating the facts like most liberals do because that is the only way they can actually attempt to come out ahead on any given subject because as Christine already knows… a liberal’s life is an unhappy one. )

Now onto the DP World deal… does anybody actually Mr. Bush is doing the right thing here.. I do. Is anybody actually listening to what the man is saying..

Look how he has refused to indulge anti-Arab sentiment over the Dubai ports deal. Can anybody say the same about many of the deal’s critics. Whatever their concerns may be, whatever their fears might be, they would not have had them, expressed them or have seen them in print had the middle name of the United Arab Emirates been something else. After all, no one goes nuts over Germany, the country where some of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorists lived and attended school.

To overlook the xenophobic element in this controversy is to overlook the obvious. It is what propelled the squabble and what sustains it. Bush put his finger on it right away. “What I find interesting is that it’s okay for a British company to manage some ports, but not okay for a company from a country that is a valuable ally in the war on terror,” he said last week. “The UAE has been a valuable partner in fighting the war on terror. It is a long way from a terrorist haven. ” Both of those comments are fairly true.. is the UAE more of a terrorist haven then say.. Japan.. yes.. but can we lump it into Iran, Jordan, Libia … no.
This isn’t the first Mr Bush has done this… He refuses to pander to anti-immigration forces and, shortly after 9/11, if you will remember, he visited Washington’s Islamic Center. He reassured American Muslims and the worldwide Islamic community that neither America nor its government was waging war on an entire people. As clueless as the man sometimes appears to be.. I think i’ts fairly difficult to find major flaws with his decision making and his general leadership.. does he get everything right.. nope.. do you?

listen, anyone who thinks that bush has ever made an independant choice other than how many wipes after he shits is crazy, that approval rating aside he’s doing fine? just look how well he handled that whole new orleans thing! the man is obviously a genius in his own mind and should get new advisers to run the nation’s business

Don’t even get me started…Bush is a fucking moron, that probably needs help getting his clothes organized and color coordinated. He has done nothing right so far and this is the worst. Lets let arab nations control all but the security of the seaports, and while we are at it put up big “WELCOME TERRORIST PLEASE DOCK HERE FOR YOUR CONVIENIENCE” signs in those 9 ports!

Just to clarify.. when you say he has done nothing right I think you should tell me what he is doing wrong, because a wide ranging statement like he has done nothing right is flawed in the fact that is is how people with no arguement argue.
On a second note as far as this port goes, it has nothing to do with another nation, the ports were already controlled by a company based in another nation. Would you like it if every country in the world suddently kicked American companies out becuase they are from America? Is it a double standard yes.. we are America we can do what we want but it’s not the way to win hearts and minds, the fact is an company based in an Arab country in itself really poses no more threat then a Deleware company doing business in California poses to me. It’s an irrelivant overeaction as long as we allow our ports to be run by companies the security risk is the same, now if you ask me should we federalize is.. no we should probably just make some hardcore fines if whatever company is running the ports fucks up.

Christopher’s post is very misleading. It’s ironic he is suggesting that the CBS poll was biased, when he did the exact same thing in this post… and he knows it… Christopher is a master manipulator. -)

1. How does the fact that CBS didn’t report that people felt the Cheney shooting accident was over-reported have ANYTHING to do with Bush’s approval rating? As a matter of fact, since it was the same people asked both questions, it would suggest that more people would be pro-Bush administration if they felt the administration (and particularly Cheney) was getting brow-beaten by the media. Obviously, the additional public sympathy for Cheney over his unfair treatment by the media did nothing to help Bush’s approval rating. But even if you agree with me, there’s still no correlation whatsoever between Bush’s approval rating, and Cheney’s unsafe hunting practices.

2. Christopher mentions a 5% margin of error on the weighting of the results based on Democrat opinion vs. Republican opinion. The problem is… Christopher never links the statistic to give it any value. For that to mean anything, we would need to know what percentage of Democrats and Republicans gave Bush a thumbs up or thumbs down. And in addition, a 5% margin of error is acceptable by any standards in self-reporting surveys.

3. Contracting an Arab country and charging that company with the security of U.S. ports is not a good idea. Again, Christopher is trying to correlate Bush not being racist (a good thing) with trusting homeland security to an Arab country to make it seem like *that’s* a good thing. It isn’t. I’ll tell you why… for the same reason that in order to run for president of the United States, you have to have been born here. Why is that? I’m guessing it’s because we want to know that our President has a vested, personal interest in making sure this country is the top priority. Now, would say, Arnold Schwarzenneger (Governor of California) if he could run for president, put the U.S. interest at the top of his priority list? Probably… does that mean we should let him become president? Hell, no. The same goes for port security. That should be trusted to a company that has a vested interest in keeping the US safe from terrorists… ie– an American company. Geographically speaking, there is a greater chance that terrorists could end up using this remotely controlled port as an entry point simply because they are neighboring that country. Think of it this way… in the U.S. which type of illegal immigrant is it harder for us to find and kick out– a Mexican, or a Russian? Mexicans can “infiltrate” much more easily simply because they are so close to us. The same principle applies over there.

4. No, President Bush isn’t always right. Neither am I? But should we hold the fucking President to a higher standard than Christine from Torrance, California? Fucking I hope so.

5. Eric, I don’t understand your analogy about banging 200 women out here… are the girls in Pennsylvania that much sluttier than the ones in California? And I’m also not sure how the bag of flour comes into play… but come on, darlin’… you gotta come up with something better than that if you don’t want a beat-down from Christopher. I learned the hard way. b-(

Christopher the Pyro stated

1. I was just pointing out the fact that CBS only choose to report the bad news about Mr. Bush.. not their shoddy news. I agree no correlation… or at least a small one.

2. I didn’t link to anything that wasn’t already their.. i’m just point out those who feel like being slightly smarter… the stat’s were in the CBS poll for everybody to read if they cared to.
Umm.. 289 republican’s… 381 democrates.. that’s 43% to 57% that will screw anything up…

3. Actually nobody is trusting American secuirty to an Arab Country.. just an Arab Country based Company.. BIG DIFFERENCE.

So there are lots of U.S.-born American citizens that work for and have an interest in the profit of this “Arab Country based Company?” Or do you think they’re mostly Arabs? You’re missing the point about why a citizen of a certain country has a more vested interest in maintaining that country than a citizen from another country. Let’s face it… most Americans don’t feel safe even travelling to an Arab country right now– ally or not. That basically tells me that we don’t trust those countries’ security measures to keep Americans safe. With that being the general sentiment, why would we feel they can keep our ports safe? And according to your theory, Christopher, that what the most people should think should set the standards here (ie– or little debate about whther or not Brokeback Mountain should be banned or not), then you should definitely realize that if people are up in arms about this being farmed out to an Arab country, then Bush shouldn’t. Period. Besides… weren’t you the one who wanted to keep jobs in America????

Also last time I checked, Audi is owned by a German company but I didn’t see any germans at the dealership when I bought my car. Your arguements are laced with racism and fear.

You don’t think they’re competent enough to operate call centers, and yet you feel they should be given a shot at making sure our borders are safe. I’m sorry… is there something I’m not getting???

You are a supporter of the Patriot Act which compromises civil liberties of U.S. citizens to make sure safety is enhanced. But you’re not fine with limiting the outsourcing of security at our borders to American our European based companies because that is somehow racist? You really don’t make much sense here, Christopher.

And I could hardly compare a company that sells cars to a company charged with keeping U.S. borders safe. Which is more important? Hrmmmmm? Again, trying to connect things to make a point that have no bearing on each other at all.

Bill Clinton, former US president, advised top officials from Dubai two weeks ago on how to address growing US concerns over the acquisition of five US container terminals by DP World.

It came even as his wife, Senator Hillary Clinton, was leading efforts to derail the deal.

Mr Clinton, who this week called the United Arab Emirates a ?good ally to America?, advised Dubai?s leaders to propose a 45-day delay to allow for an intensive investigation of the acquisition, according to his spokesman.
