A Cat Mom’s Anxieties…

So tomorrow I’m going to Palm Springs for the weekend. And it will officially be the first time I leave my little kitty (Meisha) home alone. There are a few reasons I’m experiencing a great deal of anxiety over this…

First… Meisha is very clingy. Because I work from home, she’s used to me being with her pretty much all day. She doesn’t like to be more than a few feet from me at any given moment and even when I have to use the bathroom, she feels the need to come in with me, wait for me to get done, and then follow me back to whatever room I was in before my bathroom break. I am worried that she will feel abandoned if I don’t come home tomorrow night and snuggle with her on the sofa like I normally do. I’ve explained to her that I am coming back on Sunday night, but she tends to get distracted with other things as I’m trying to talk to her and I don’t think she’s getting the full effect of what I’m saying.

Second, Meisha is a tad destructive. She doesn’t mean to be, but she doesn’t consider things like… throwing herself at the screen because there is a bird outside could break the screen and she could fall two stories. She doesn’t think about why it is a bad idea to chew on the computer cables under my desk, etc.

Now… as any good mommy would do, I’ve secured a babysitter for her. Christopher. I wrote out very explicit directions on how to feed her, blah, blah, blah and even left him a little thank you gift in my ‘fridge to entice him to do a good job. I mentioned a few times how much our lives (his and mine both) would be hell if anything happened to my kitty. And I was feeling pretty confident about him playing “daddy” until tonight.

Tonight, Christopher came over and hung out for a few hours and Meisha wouldn’t go anywhere near him. This is probably because every time he comes inside my apartment the first thing he shouts is “Where’s the Devil???” It’s loud and scary and I’m sure it offends her. On top of that, before he left, he told Meisha that while I’m gone, they’ll have a party and he’ll take her to a park where she can meet some boy cats and she’ll get pregnant. “Chris!” I said apalled. He thought it was funny… I didn’t. Then he also alluded to the fact that he might change her name while I’m gone because Meisha is too hard to spell. He clearly is not seeing Meisha as a daughter the way I do. I don’t think he’d ever make a joke about getting his daughter laid and impregnated. Christopher needs to change his perspective on this whole thing.

I was put a bit at ease when he picked up one of her toys and started playing with her. But I just don’t know if it’s enough… he almost forgot the keys to get into my place that I put by his wallet so he wouldn’t forget them when he left.

Sigh… I guess you have to cut the cord eventually, right? I have to learn to trust other people (by “other people” I specifically mean Christopher since I don’t really have trouble trusting “other people.”). We’ll see if when I come back my apartment and kitty are still in one piece. He did do a good job taking care of my plants when I was in Canada, so hopefully, this will turn out just as good. I’m crossing my fingers… -)

Oh come on.. You are simply overreacting.. The kitty will be fine…
Also if you worry so much about Christopher, you should not have left him with the cat. You should maybe leave the kitty with your neighbors P

Except I’m not allowed to have cats in my complex (well, I could but then I’d have to pay pet rent which is ridiculous) so Meisha is under the radar… so the neighbors would probably not be a good choice.

And yes… I’m sure Meish will be fine. -)

Christine, I think you have attachment disorder! let’s not forget either this is a “CAT” we are talking about here not a baby girl…as well cats can pretty much take care of themselves as long as they have food and water! It’s not like a dog where you have to take it out to do it’s buisness etc. You could leave food and water in a dish, and leave her alone for 3 days and chris wouldn’t even have to come over. )

EXACTLY WHAT I TOLD HER… little does she know that I decided to prove this little point by not feeding the cat and calling her mom and telling her I would take care of her Sat morning.

hey if you really want to prove the point, put the cat food in the most obscure place in the house and you will see that little bastard find it and be well nourished at day three

That is an excellent idea. Her little cat is the fucking devil it totally just looks at me like i’m going to kick it across the house… I completely don’t trust that cat, it takes after it’s owner way too much.

Now you all are trying to prove a point for nothing.. Yes, #3 by Keith is pretty much accurate but you do not have to go all the way of #5 - #7! #-o

You do not have to treat Meisha like a baby girl but you definitely do not have to treat it like a stray mongrel either! > P

;) maybe 5 and my 7 were a little extreme, but it could be fun to see how far you can kick a cat d

Okay, gentlemen, here’s the update. It turns out that (1) Christopher turned out to be a good cat babysitter, and (2) you were all wrong about it being okay to leave a cat for 3 days unattended. Meisha, it turns out, jumped behind the dresser in my bedroom again and got stuck back there (the dresser is really heavy and about 5 feet tall. The space behind it is a triangle shape– since its in the corner– and once she falls back there, she can’t jump straigt up to get out). I had to devise a harness once to pull her back out over the top… so Christopher left me a voicemail Saturday night saying that when he came for the Saturday night feeding, he came in, couldn’t find her anyway, and realizing he should probably have visual confirmation that she was alright, started searching for her. He eventually thought maybe he should look behind the dresser and sure enough, she was stuck back there. o He’s strong enough to move the dresser, so he moved it a bit to allow her access in and out.

When I came home Sunday afternoon, she was happy to see me… but ironically enough, she didn’t mention anything about getting caught behind the dresser. -)

Anyway… proof that leaving her for three days could be really bad (especially if she’d started to piss behind there or didn’t have access to her food) and also proof that I can trust Christopher to take good care of my little girl. So thanks, Christopher. Meisha thanks you too. -)

I was actually talking to chris when he said he couldn’t find your cat how funny is that? Way to go sherlock you solved the case of the missing pussy! ) Oh and christine I’m glad your cat is ok and all, but let me clarify if you don’t have saftey hazards in your house for you cat to get stuck it is safe for them to be on there own! :-w Here’s a thought have Chris being the big strong guy you say he is come over and the 2 of you move the dresser flush with the wall and you don’t have to worry about meisha jumping back there and getting stuck anymore! o

Well… the dresser is angled so that I can see the t.v. from my bed (it’s on top of the dresser) because the t.v. in my bedroom is one of the older kinds with a deep back (pre-plasma and flat screens)so it won’t fit on there without the extra room in the back… but we will probably have to figure out some way to create enough room for her to get out because she keeps doing it (I thought she might actually learn from the first unpleasant experience when I had to hoist her up with a blanket that I tricked her into stepping over).

Actually… having Christopher come rescue Meisha is good because it gets him to come over without me having to cook for him. -)

I can’t believe he thought to even look behind the dresser, but I’m so glad he did! LOL!

Chris super sleuth for hire..if you have a cat who’s dumb enough to jump somewher repeatedly and get stuck I can find it d

Keith the Director quibbed this

Christine here’s an idea Why not just pull the dresser out away from the wall as a whole? keep it an extra 1/2 - foot away and ur cat can walk in and out at leisure and you an angle you tveven more so you can watch all your porns even easier while in bed ) It’s win win
