Bad Idea of the Week: Sending Laura Bush to Jerusalem

But too bad for them, the first lady does not speak Arabic, and so she went on… When she got to the mosque, she took off her shoes and proceeded to enter barefoot. It’s unclear as to whether the secret service detail that followed her in took off their shoes as well. A bunch of uninvited Americans wearing earpieces and guns, trapsing through the holiest of shrines… reverent indeed. Those Palestinians are so overly sensitive. They let the littlest things get under their skin…

But regardless of who was or wasn’t barefoot, several women who were trying to study inside the mosque shook their fingers at them, annoyed with the intrusion.

Ah, but haven’t they heard the saying? Sticks and stones (and weapons of mass destruction) can break my bones, but shaking fingers can never hurt me? No? Hmmm… maybe it’s an American thing.

I guess finger-shaking wasn’t enough. As she left, protestors grew so loud and angry that Israeli police formed a human chain around the Secret Service agents who, in turn, packed around her– black scarf and all. It got so intense, police even had to yell and push people away who came too close and who were too aggressive. Finally, they whisked Laura into a limo and made a getaway.

Job well done, Laura. Excellent way to reduce Anti-American sentiment. Are you available next month? We’d like to send you to France next. You could don a beret and carry around cream puffs…
