Big Decision… Big Day… Lasik, Here I Come!

So I finally, finally, finally did it! Yesterday, while at my optometrist’s office, I made the decision that contact lenses are going to be a thing of the past for me, and I’m going to finally get Lasik surgery. I’ve been wanting this for years, but just never got around to making the appointment with the surgeon and committing to a date to go under the knife (er… I mean, laser). But now it’s set in stone. August 17th is the big day!

I’m super excited about this. If you’re someone who was lucky enough to have crap eye sight like myself, you’ll understand when I say -5.25 in my left eye and -4.75 in my right pretty much sucks. I can’t see my alarm clock sitting on my nightstand a foot away without picking up my glasses and looking through them. I can’t swim without googles. I can’t fall asleep when Christopher puts on Band of Brothers (again) because I know when I wake up, my eyes will feel like sheets of plastic have been glued to them. I can’t cry and make Christopher feel guilty about yelling at me because the next day, my contacts will fog up like San Francisco in December.

But freedom is just around the corner!

No more little round cases, no more forgetting that I’m out of saline, no more crawling around on the floor looking for the one I dropped. It will be life changing to say the least.

God gave me perfect vision as a child, and a doctor somewhere in Beverly Hills will (hopefully) give it back to me at 32! It will be a rebirth… it will be like visiting Asia for the first time! Everything will be new and different. There will be no more unhappiness in my life. I will be a brand new woman… full of exuberance and lust for life. Despite what Christopher says, I think my expectations are realistic.

I will keep you all informed of the inevitable life-changing events that will certainly be rooted in this decision to get my corneas cut open and then welded back together. Ahhh… life is good, y’all. Life. Is. Good. ;-)

BTW… if you have stories about people who needed enhancement surgeries right away, or went blind, or some shit like that… keep ‘em to yourself. I don’t need anybody to piss on my parade. But if you want to send me gifts and flowers after my surgery, you’re welcome to. I like tuilps. ;-)

Hey Christine, congratulations on making that decision! Goodluck on the Lasik. ;) I just started wearing contacts three months ago (mine is negative 0.5 in my left eye and negative 2 in the right) but it feels like a big ordeal for me everytime. I wish I could have a Lasik too.. Just curious, how much would it cost you? :)

  2. Christopher says:

Damn Lei, you stumped me for a little bit on how you broke the blog! :)

  3. dish says:

:o yeah, i wondered myself, too… all i did was to post my comment the way i used to LOL.. glad it’s fixed ;)

  4. Erica says:

I was considering Lasik- though I don’t have an issues with my contacts outside of the occassional dry eye. My boyfriend absolutely refuses- he won’t have any laser near his eye but he has a lot of problems with his and is about to go back to glasses. I’m blind as a bat and I’m connsidering it… yes yes… how much? lol

  5. Christine says:

I think mine will be on the expensive end because I went with a surgeon that is the official eye surgeon of pretty much all the west coast pro sports teams… so I know it can be done for cheaper. Mine will be around $4500 for both eyes and all the pre-op and post-op appointments.

Dish… your eyes aren’t really that bad… as a matter of fact, I don’t think they’ll even do it for you for that low of a prescription.

  6. aJ says:

Wow.. Best of luck Christine :)
as for #5, that is extremely expensinve.. In India, with similar technology, it would cost (converted) approx USD 500 per eye only for the surgery. Add another $500 for meds, checkups etc.

  7. jorunn says:

Good luck! I had laser surgery done a couple of years ago, I had -7,5 and -9,0 and I can see perfect now. I had to have PRK instead of LASIK though (it’s worse), so for you it probably won’t even hurt.

  8. jorunn says:

I got it for free, because the norweigan health system covers it when your eye sight is very bad.

  9. Christine says:

Yes, the U.S. is very expensive when it comes to this and insurance does not cover any of it. But all of these kinds of doctors offer free financing, so you can make payments for two years.

  10. Trouble says:

I thought it was cute that you can?t swim without ?googles?? I knew Google was taking over, but I didn?t realize to what extent.

I have a bunch of ex?s and some friends who?ve had Lasik, and even the one?s who got to within 0.5 to 1 of ?perfekt? were happy with their results and have no regrets. The technology has come a long way since Radial Keratomy. I wish you the best of luck but I?m sure you won?t need it.

  11. Christine says:

Thank you, Trouble. My optometrist said the same thing… that even the few patients she’s had that didn’t end up with 20/20 but with 20/25 or 20/30, were still really happy with the results. My ex-fiance’s dad had it done when it first was available and now he’s in his late 50s and still happy. I am SO excited about it!

And I’m going to blame the google/goggle mix up on the muscle memory of my right index finger. Since I type the word google more than goggle, that double oo rears its ugly little conjoined head every time. ;-)

  12. Christine says:

By the way, aJ… EVERYTHING is more expensive in the U.S. Honestly, I think aside from like Tokyo, and maybe some city in Malaysia, U.S. cities (L.A., NYC, and Honolulu) are the most expensive in the world. But, like I said… I’ve seen it advertised for about $900 per eye… so I *chose* to drain my bank account by going with someone more expensive (and hopefully better– or at least someone who would be really careful as not to ruin his reputation).

However, since my surgeon is the official eye surgeon of the L.A. Lakers, I’m expecting to be a better basketball player when this is all over as well. And to me, that was worth the extra couple grand. I feel a need to show Keith that women can dominate on the basketball court… ;-)

OH! I’m also going to try to learn how to surf once it’s done… my horrible vision is what’s kept me from trying it already.

  13. Keith says:

good luck, eye surgery is way to risky for my I like my eyesight the way it is. Fortunately god graced me with perfect vision and need no help with glasses etc. I wouldn’t risk the permanent loss of sight if they should fuck somehting up. Good luck! I personally would deal with the contacts! :-? ?

  14. Haas says:

Hey good for you Christine… All the best.

Do my eyes decieve me or hv you moved closed to Aj and I(see the location in ur comments)

  15. Christopher says:

    Haas

Looks like your eyes might be deceiving you. :)
    lol

  16. Christine says:

Maybe you want to get Lasik with me, Haas? ;-)

  17. Sweetnsimple says:

wow that would be soooo amazing to just be able to see without lenses! I hate falling asleep wearing mine or not being able to see my guys face clearly in the morning! dont know how bling I am exactly but everything is blurry colours after hands distance or so cant go anywhere do anything without my lenses… yet I dont know I’f I’m brave enough of even have enough cash for eye surgery. Good luck and best wishes I’m really intrigued to hear how it goes!

  18. Christine says:

Thanks, Sweet. I’ve been wearing contacts for 16 years, so this will be remarkably different for me not to. And yes, the worst thing about lenses (because honestly, I didn’t really mind them that much), was falling asleep in them, or having one tear in your eye and having to go the rest of the day with one in and one out. :-)

  19. jorunn says:

Christine: Here it says your location is in Norway. There must be something wrong with the coding.

  20. Christine says:

Unless the U.S. has annexed Norway… which I don’t think George W. has decided to invade (yet)… the coding is definitely wrong. ;-) This is me –> **==

  21. Haas says:

See my eyes are fine ^ :d btw if ur icon says Norway then Norway has annexed US not the other way round(which is more probable actually) :P

  22. Christine says:

Well… just to keep the site up to date… I’ll have you know it’s done. Last Thursday, my corneas were lasered open, my sight fixed, and now I am seeing very clearly without contacts or glasses. I have to say… I couldn’t be more pleased with how it turned out. It’s amazing to be able to see again and worth every penny. I even got a bouquet of flowers from Christopher on the day of my surgery and he also came over to fix me dinner and hook up my new printer. While he was here (I was still coming off my Zanex), I fell asleep on the sofa and wasn’t very good company, but he didn’t complain… not even once. The boy takes good care of me. :-)

  23. aJ says:

    Hey Christine, great news..
    Am happy for you :)
    Congratulations… :) >-

  24. Christine says:

    Thank you, darlin’ :-)

  25. Christopher says:

Now she spends her days whinning about how she might have rubbed her eye and damaged it… *sigh* … :)

  26. Trouble says:

    Eyes all fixed… Now you’re perfect…

Glad they didn’t get the charts mixed up and amputate your eyes by mistake… Whew…

I would have sent you flowers, but I figured if you couldn’t see them, there was no point… Well, that and I’m broke…

  27. Christine says:

It’s the thought that counts anyway, Trouble. ;-) And yes… now I am perfect.

  28. Hallo Christine,

Now some time has gone, is everything still fine with your eyes and lasik operation?
