Can you imagine how large the discrepancy is now?
Now I know that I haven’t seen it all, but sometimes I really honestly believe there isn’t that many things left in the world that will appall me. $40+ meals with a few slices of meat don’t faze me, Christine demanding to be let out of the car at a stop light barely makes my pulse quicken but today when I opened my mail and was glancing through what I usually would consider not even worth my time junk mail from churches. These churches obviously don’t know that I’m beyond saving, I like to sin.. and I’m usually not all that sorry after I do it… so I think it is safe to say that I’m officially a lost cause.
So when I read the words…
“It’s Tax Season and You May Need some Help” I thought, I wonder what type of help this church up in Palos Verdas is offering.
“Dear Friends, Let us help you pay for your taxes this season” hmm.. sounds great! I could use that kind of help!
“Join us for brunch, lunch, Sunday and Thursday service and our special Tax financing on Saturdays at “Vista Verde Shopping Center”…. ok ok I get it they want to finance my Tax bill.. what is in it for them…. they can’t be doing this out of the goodness of their heart right…? So I scanned the page some more.. found the fine print and buried in that fine print was the 17% interest rate they were charging people to help pay off that tax bill. OUCH. Considering a my credit cards hover around 9% and a regular loan would never cost more then 14% it didn’t seem like this church was trying to help people at all. Basically it just wanted a piece of the screwing.. oh these people are screwed they have to pay some Taxes.. we should make some money off this, oh I know we can use our deep pockets to finance people and make 17% interest off them.
I’m not much of a fan of organized religion and I usually see it as a tool to manipulate the masses, generally however I don’t have ultra negative feelings, however in light of this newest piece of junk mail it is obvious that some churches… (regular Christian churches) have decided to enter into the realm of screwing up peoples finances, I think it might be time to change the laws so that religious organizations also pay taxes, especially in light of the fact they want to wear the banker’s hat instead of wielding the sole cleansing wand.
Have you ever stopped to wonder.. what if religion is the worst thing that can happen to a society? Here are some facts that are commonly unknown.
The top three most religious prosperous developed countries:
1. United States
The three least religious prosperous developed countries:
18 Countries Total:
The more religious a society the higher the homicide rate.
Highest homicide rate: 1. United States, 2. Portugal, 3. Switzerland
Lowest homicide rate: 1. Spain, 2. Norway, 3. Japan
This correlation holds true through all countries.
The more religious a society the higher the abortion rate.
Highest abortion rate: 1. United States, 2. Australia, 3. Canada
Lowest abortion rate: 1. Denmark, 2. Sweden, 3. Great Britain
This correlation holds true through all countries.
Furthermore if you dig deeper, agnostics & atheists commit the least crimes, have the least abortions, have the least number of early pregencys.. infact they are all around less dysfunctional.
Despite the best effort of “pro-life” Americans, abortion rates are much higher in our Christian nation, than the lowest in relatively secular ones such as Japan, France, and Scandinavian countries. In general higher rates of belief in and worship of a creator correlate with higher rates of homicide, juvenile and early mortality, STD infection rates, teen pregnancy and abortions.
What does all this mean?
The question is one of causation and there is no clear answer. Whether religion leads directly to dysfunctionality , or religions merely flourish in dysfunctional societies, neither conclusion flattens religion. The first tells us that religion is a hindrance to the development of moral character and the second that religion hinders progress by distracting us from our troubles (with imaginary solution to real problems).
Study done by Creighton university with 800 million people surveyed. ( yes 800 million ). The data is current gathered between 1990 and 2005. Dysfunctional is defined by indicators of poor social health such as, homicide, suicide, low life expectancy, STD infection, abortion, early pregnancy. Religiosity is measured by biblical literalism, frequency of prayer, and service attendance as well as absolute belief in a creator in terms of ardency, conservatism and activities.
As much as I enjoy ripping on the Muslims tonight I am going to come to their defense. Earlier this week my mother forwarded me an e-mail about the fact that the United States Postal Service was issuing a stamp commemorating a Muslim holiday. She was outrage that the United States would issue a stamp for the Muslims the same group of people she felt who attacked us on 9/11 and at various other times. I felt it was important to point out to her that we have a separation of church and state here in America. TThis separation of church and state that allows us the freedom of religion also makes it essential for the post office to issue stamps that commemorate all religions somewhat equally. It is completely irrelevant if the majority of this country is Christian or any other religion. I also thought it was prudent to point out that we may not want to put a magnifying glass on Christians considering their somewhat tainted history. The Christian religion has killed and persecuted millions upon millions of people in the name of religion. The Crusades were a holy Christian war against a variety of people but mostly the Muslims and Islam. In this case I think we need to realize that it was not Muslims who attacked us on 9/11 it was terrorists and terrorist can come in a lot of forms. The terrorist from 9/11 happen to be radical Islam but this does not mean that the Muslim religion is somehow a enemy of the United States. The e-mail she was forwarding on also felt the need to state quite a view other so called facts which were really not based in fact at all. I do not think people should ever randomly forward e-mails because happen to think everybody should be Christian and someone wrote an email that would enforce that belief. Christine could write an e-mail that with sound 100% believable about probably almost any subject but could be 100% false and yet at any given time there are thousands of e-mails being forwarded throughout the Internet that are completely false and sent on as truth. I think it is high time that people take 10 minutes and check one or two facts from these sensationalized e-mails and see if what you’re forwarding on is even somewhat true because it probably is not.
Living here in the states where we have a bunch of fucking pussies running our newspapers it’s pratically impossible to see what all the fuss overseas is about.
I’ve decided to hook everybody up with the muslim cartoons.. people really need to get a sense of humor.. I know it sucks to be muslim but seriously.. relax.. it’s ok it’s a fucking cartoon.
