You know… he doesn’t want my advice because he’s pissed off that after teaching me how to use Cute FTP and Dreamweaver, I’ve basically out-skilled him in like 2 months… Christopher hates to think that I can do anything faster or better than he can… which is why he specifically asked me not to comment. And for that reason, I am specifically going to be the first one to comment on this. Now that I’ve done that… I hope someone can help him with this problem.

I could give you a couple of reasons why your pages are taking so long. _These reasons_ are only from what I pertain from viewing your site and is only a surface examination..
For one, the images in the Syndicate/feeds section, host them on your server. It will improve performance a bit. The same for the various voting icons after each post (Del.icio.us, furl etc etc.)
Next, I’ve heard(and on my use felt) that the “polls” section is a bit slow. Could be the plugin I tried or something else, but it does cause lags.
You could also move the blog info stats to it’s own page instead of the sidebar. The link to that page can be _statically_ put in the sidebar.
Try and disable these for a couple of days and see if the performance improves.
The page that you have mentioned is slow mainly due to the huge number of comments it has. That is taking a bit of time, *but*, even with that many comments, it’s still taking far too long. Can you try and investigate the indexes in the articles and the comments table. They _might_ be corrupted..
Last, turn on caching.. It should be on by default but, if by some chance you have turned it off, then turn it back on. And also enable the option to serve gzipped version of the pages. That should compress their sizes and enable faster transfer. The caveat to this, I think not all browsers support gzipped content. I know IE, FF and Opera do. No idea about Safari and Konqueror or any other browser out there..

Ohh… Just went through the post again and I think the IP lookup for the country code and the corresponding flag for that country would also add to the slowdown.

Chris look into what u added recently… IP lookup, flags ect were already there for a long time and they seemed to work fine back then.
Maybe its a new plugin u tried… I hv had bad experiences with plugins(sometimes the support from the creator suddenly goes and it keeps trying to connect to their site)
I dont think the prob is with the db unless
a) you decided to fix something in there that was working
b) you upgraded or moved the files and restored them.
Anyway backtracking is the best way to narrow down these speed issues(try to contact ur site support as well they might hv prob from their side)
Actually Haas, I’ve always noticed the site a bit slower than other WP sites.
Like you, I think he uses a lot of plugins and hotlinks to external images as well
I usually maintain a rule for my blog, at no point have more than 5-6 _Frontend_ plugins active. They _will_ slow down the blog, even if by a little. So, if each slows down the rendering by say, half a second, it adds up to 2.5 seconds already.
(I know, .5 sec is a large number. It was just an example.)
