Rock the Vote… or maybe just vote for rock?

vs.

Who received more votes for his coveted position… Taylor or George?

Pop culture vs. politics… Last Tuesday night, 63 million people picked up their phones and voted for who would be the next “American Idol.” 63 million! That is more votes than any president has ever had in a presidential election. So what does that say??? Do Americans care more about who should get a recording contract than who should run our country?

That may not be quite the case… after all, you can vote for you favorite A.I. candidate at any age, and while I’m not sure of the percentage, I’m guessing a significant portion of American Idol fans are under 18. It’s also easy to vote for American Idol– you simply call a phone number and your vote is registered… no absentee forms to send in, no standing in line at poll centers, no dangling chads, no pages upon pages of measures and ballots for people you didn’t even know were running, no forty-five minute review of how the electoral college works.

Or is the problem much deeper…? Do young people (18-34) really care more about who wins a vocal contest than the political and social problems the U.S. is facing? Or… maybe they just feel that even if they did vote, it wouldn’t really matter– either they’re not heard, or regardless of who wins– nothing ever changes.

Or maybe actually reading up on issues, and watching debates, and forming your opinion about what the country should do about the economy, social issues, and foreign policies takes effort. And time. More effort and time than it takes to zone out for an hour twice a week and be entertained by television. Maybe we’re just a bunch of lazy fucks who avoid anything that might make us think too hard or feel a call to action to actually do something other than come home from our jobs, overeat, and lie on the couch for three hours hoping to be entertained.

Either way… it says something. And that something may not be good. The silver lining… well… most people can tell you who the president is, but I’m guessing that by the next presidential term a lot of people will forget that Taylor Hicks was this season’s American Idol. Fickle or forgetful? Maybe these people shouldn’t be voting for president anyway. -)

Ok yes i do belive it is because any age ppl can vote for A.I. and for shits sake I hope th eoverwhelming majority of voters are under 18. I think reality t.v. has gone too far, and it’s actually helped turn me away from the tv unless I want to watch a dvd or sports event. So thank you to network execs that have put somuch shit on tv that is’tworht watching d so I can do other things!

Oh and eric you best be fwding me those pics since i was conveniently left out of the loop )

Hey Hey Hey.. Chris not fair.. What about the rest of us? Why don’t we get to see the pic? (

About the topic of the post, as you put it, a majority of the voters for AI will be the youngers ones who most often try to ignore politics.. And do not forget the “illegal aliens” vote for AI too who can obviously not go and vote for GW or whoever else is running..

I doubt the illegal aliens are watching programming in English and paying to vote for AI– I think they charge you each time you call and vote since it’s a 900 number. But I agree with the younger ones being a majority of the audience.

I believe the voting is free. I have never called, but have friends that have.

It’s good to know all the informed intelligent people went on to pick W.. ) I don’t know about anybody else but whoever this AI winner was.. he looks like a complete loser. Voting is free.. and I also think there are probably soem illigals watching it.. either way we arn’t comparing apples and apples.

I think we need more informed voters not just more people voting. It’s like a bunch of monkeys pulling a lever. Most people don’t know their congressman, a Senator or even the VP. It’s sad.

I agree… but at the same time, that’s not the fault of the voters (completely). Where can people go to get honest information? The candidates just say what they need to say to get elected, the “news” organizations are rarely that– they all slant the news to favor someone over someone else… there are very few sources that are reliable enough to give straight facts about issues. You think the Bush administration has been upfront about everything? Of course not. Some facts are withheld for national security reasons, some are withheld (or even made up) to convince the public to elect him for a second term… I mean some voters are monkeys pulling a lever, but even those that try to be informed find it difficult to sort through all the propaganda bullshit put out there by candidates and organizations that have their own agendas.

Well, most of the media is left-wing. There have been studies and polls to confirm this. There are now thankfully more right-wing new outlets as well. At least for libertarians like me. There has never been or ever will be an unbiased news media. Read both sides and make up your own mind. You don’t need the media to tell you about who represents you in federal or state government and how it works. Most people think the 2000 election was the first time someone who won the electoral vote also didn’t win the popular vote. It happen twice before. Once the House had to decide the Presidency. It is the people’s fault why they are not informed. They’re the ones who rather watch reality shows and surf for porn or whatever and not read and/or watch the news from different sources. Sorry that isn’t Bush’s fault too. Had to say it.

I meant it wasn’t the Media’s fault about people not getting informed. Sorry about that.
