New York: The United States Report on Unsubstantiated Statistics reports that statistics with no basis in fact was up 12.8% in 2004 compared to 2003. This nearly $25 Million study, up by 3.5% from the previous year, gathered data on nearly 83% of the total statistics published in print, internet news, and congressional reports.

Some of the highlights include a 45% increase in wardrobe malfunctions, 23% increase in violence against persons, 95% decrease in trust in the government, and .05% decrease in people believing government reports (in which only 35% of the US population believes it anyway.)

When asked about the government making up statistics, a leader of the congressional ethics committee said, “We’re Congress. We don’t make things up.” That was said with a straight face.
