flock review at my site..

I’m curious, do you tend to tweak your site to be viewed “optimally” in a specific browser?
A blog-friend of mine was over last night and he was showing me his site. It came up all messed up and his comment was, “Well, you’re using IE, no wonder, I optimized it for Firfox.”
That got me to thinking, so I checked my stats and discovered that nearly 70% of the people who hit my sites use IE and only 6% use Firefox, less than 2% use Mozilla and everything else was less than 1%.
So, if I were wanting to optimize my site to look the best for the majority of my viewers, shouldn’t I focus on the (vast) majority?
I’m curious what you think and what your reasoning might be to optimize otherwise…
Christopher the Pyro scribbled
I try and optimize for all browsers, it’s difficult. I love firefox and anything non-IE because IE blows when it comes to speed and features, but the market uses IE so I always optimzie for it first. This site actually looks better in Fire-fox because it has some features that are not possible in IE. Your right optimize for the majority, but encourage adoption of other mozilla based browsers at this time they are light years ahead of IE.. (In my humble opinion)
Ben the Kingpin penned this
I use IE because it’s there, it’s simple, it’s easy and all my bookmarks are where I want them. To me, the whole browser difference thing is pointless, because I don’t use those features. I have Firefox, I used it for awhile and then went back because there was nothing to hold me to using it.
Not to mention that I wanted to see my site exactly how 2/3 of my visitors saw it.
I realize this means to most geeks that I’ve “sold out”. So, I guess I’ll quit while I’m ahead and not mention that I’ve had an AOL address since 1994.
…
…Oops.
Christopher the Pyro asserted
Well I can understand wanting to see your site like 2/3 users do… that is logical, but you should realize IE is not the best browser for productivity.. I can give you 2 reasons a mozilla based browser is better, #1 Tabbed browsing which makes you much more effecient, #2 Build in RSS feeds, Flock is cool in that it centralizes book marks.. Mozilla is also slighly faster, and I love the cool plugins for example, the PDF plugin is cool, open in browser, new tab or download.. those are important effeciency improvements, also if your a web designer you will love the “Web Designer” extension in that it lets you edit the CSS of any webpage on the interent (including this one) so it’s a great learning tool. I won’t even get into my hate of AOL lol.
Ben the Kingpin said this
I can appreciate tabbed browsing–though it flies in the face of the way that I use Windows. I like having all my open sites visible in my taskbar and tabbed browsing tends to infuriate me because I have to have *THAT* program active to see all my open websites.
Sometimes I switch between Word, Excel, Paint Shop Pro, possibly a game and several open websites. Tabbed browsing defeats efficiency for me when I’m doing this.
I still haven’t really gotten into RSS feeds, yet. Perhaps that will mean more to me as life progresses.
I’m not a web designer by trade.
Please don’t misunderstand–I’m not saying IE is the best by any stretch. My hate-on for Microsoft may not be as strong as others, as well.
I have come to appreciate that there are certain things that the “typical user” will not use, nor appreciate. Thus, there is a place in this world for Word, Excel and AOL. The “average user” is not a techified geek who revels in every little enhancement, bell or whistle. They just want to log on, get a piece of information and log off. Or sign in, be productive and sign off.
Techified geeks think completely differently–and that’s not wrong. It’s just very hard for them to understand that “better” is not an absolute. It’s definition depends entirely on the perspective of the user.
Christopher the Pyro chimed in with
True… I don’t hate Microsoft either, but I am disappointed with IE, it just seems like a program that 99% of their users use, should be better or evolve a little faster. Excell tho, ROCKS
Ben the Kingpin asserted
FYI, I’ve heard that IE 7.X (supposedly the next version) will have tabbed browsing and other elements pulled directly from Firefox.
Yeah, well, try to get Java to interact with Excel via a web-interface. Your love for it will diminish…

Could this comment chain get any more boring? And yes… there are things that the typical user will not use, nor appreciate. Good observation.
Ben the Kingpin asserted
More boring? Well, we could actually start inserting code chunks into our posts.
Christine the Lioness commented
Good point.
CT the Virgin pontificated
I wrote this post from inside the browser? cool eh?
Not really.

And we are going to listen to a lamer who is using wordpress.com right.. lol, get some skills and run your own wordpress install and then maybe.. just maybe you can tell us what browsers are good and bad.. because as it is know your credintials are a weak.

Techies sure can get emotional about a little bet of tech that will only exist for a few months before they move and have to recreate all their links and doodads all over again, can’t they?
stonemonkey45 the Virgin remarked
LOL techies get very silly over a little bit of tech I agree …
… tabbed browesing adds nothing to my life, i.e, firefox they all do the same thing, I like I.E. but for sites of a questionable nature or heavy with adds/potential spyware I will switch to firefox to view them as it is safer in that respect. I have opera, but its way to overcomplicated when all I want to do is look at a webpage.
