The Mystery of My Melty Ice Cream Sandwiches…

Five days ago, I bought a package of those Skinny Cow ice cream sandwiches (love those things). Came home, stuck ‘em in my freezer. Three days ago, I went to eat one, opened the freezer, pulled out the package and opened it. The ice cream was kinda soft– not in a good way– in a sort of melty way and one of the cookie ends broke apart when I pulled it out. Weird, I thought.

Yesterday, I went to get another one, opened the package, and the same thing happened. A little too melted… Wondering if maybe there was something wrong with the compressor on my freezer, I pulled out a few other things (frozen hamburgers, a bag of frozen peas, Eggo Waffles) and checked ‘em out, but they were all still satisfactorily frozen.

Today, I showed Christopher my melty ice cream sandwiches. “Do you think my freezer is doing something weird to the ice cream?” He just looked at me. “I have no idea,” he said, but he was a little preoccupied and didn’t put much thought into the mystery.

The freezer temp knob is turned to the number marked “ideal” by the manufacturers of the freezer and I’ve never had this problem before. If anyone has any ideas about what might be going on with my Skinny Cows, I’d love to hear your thoughts.

I’ll bet you have a self-defrosting freezer — at a pre-set interval, the freezer will warm up in order to prevent frost from forming on the walls. Then it will begin sub-zero operations again. It repeats this cycle nightly (or every 2-3 days, depending on the manufacturer). For most “harder” foods (like hamburger, steaks, etc.) this is not a problem, but for soft-serve style of ice cream, it can be devastating — as you now know!

Has ‘topher been marketing this stuff?? Skinny cow for an ice cream desert?? It just sounds like an oxymoron to me! I’m sure it’s supposed to denote skim milk, or something like that, but using “cow” in a “skinny” product lines seems… well, wrong! I guess it does get brand recognition though!

The logo is great. She’s a svelt, sexy little cow lying on her side.

For only 140 calories, those ice cream sandwiches are GOOD too! I’ll check to see if it’s doing the defrosting thing… today, some of the meat is starting to get soft too so I think I might try knocking the temp down a few degrees and see what happens.

EEww — a sexy cow?? I was going to say that (I thought) it *must* be a California company, but now I see it’s Nestles, so it’s the Swiss who are whacky!

By all means, check the thermostat. There’s nothing worse than soft meat… right, ‘topher?

Yes, she’s a sexy cow. A healthy, fit cow. The best kind of cow. We need to shift these paradigms we have about cows being fat…

The Swiss are a bit whacky… but that Swiss Miss girl was always really cute.

Ironically, Swiss Miss is not Nestles. It is owned by ConAgra Foods. I *thought* she was a cute girl too — and with ample breasts, but according to their promotional product material, Swiss Miss no longer includes a woman in the logo — friggin, PC types!

What about the “Christopher soft meat” comment?? No rebuttal, no comment, not even a smilie??? — I’m hurt (

I thought it was funny but I figured Christopher would have a more witty come back… although he was a bit occupied tonight with the whole meat thing. hehe. x

He must be preoccupied by something! It’s not like Christopher to avoid a phallic reference aimed his way )

I cranked up the thermostat inside and it appears things are freezing in there again… at least for now. -)
