The Predators of Dateline

There has always been something that bothered me about the show “To Catch a Predator”, Christine and I will have these conversations where she thinks the show is totally legit and I think it’s a bunch of bullshit entrapment.  As I was doing some research for this post I came to learn that the show is supported by a group called “Perverted Justice”, they actually setup the stings and members of their group are the ones who pose as minors on the Internet chat rooms and attempt to lure men into meeting them for sex.

What’s interesting about this is that in May 07, the former producer Marsha Bartel filed a lawsuit against NBC, alleging that she was fired for insisting that the shows correct its violations of “numerous journalistic ethical standards”.  For example Dateline relies on Perverted Justice to handle the setup of the stings, the group would show the producers only selected excerpts from chat logs.  Perverted Justice volunteers would plead with suspects to meet them in person, even after the suspect initially declined.

According to Collin County Texas, District Attorney John Roach, the involvement of Perverted Justice activists made the chat logs from their stings useless in court.  Police engaging in such stings have to follow a strict protocol, always making sure the suspect initiates any sexually explicit chat, to prevent an entrapment defense.

In June prosecutors in Murphy, Texas announced they had to drop all charges against all 24 suspects arrested during Catch a Predator’s stings.

I have to say in this case, I’m happy that some of datelineour constitutional rights are being held up.. even tho I believe some of these guys aren’t good people.. the law is the law and we shouldn’t be breaking it for the sake of entertainment…. entrapment laws are in place to protect us, the civilian.

Entrapment is only entrapment if the police do it. The fact that an outside organization poses as the fake child and sets up the meeting means it’s NOT entrapment. The guy goes to a house to have sex with what he thinks is a minor. The police swoop in and arrest him for that– which by the way, IS a crime.

I’ve watched the show many times and quite frankly, I don’t feel sorry for these asshole pedophiles one little bit. Some of them drive four hours to visit what they think is a 13 year old girl, their pockets stuffed with drugs and condoms. They’re making the decision to do that. They’re making the decision to continue talking to a minor online after she tells them her age and after they’ve already said no once to coming over to her place. For most people… the moment they find out the person they’re talking to is underage, they STOP talking. It’s not that hard… and it’s not like chat rooms aren’t full of other skanky people to talk to. Bottom line… these guys like little girls (and boys) and despite the fact they have ample opportunities to just let it go, they get in their cars and drive over to see her (or him), hoping to have sex. Fuck them. Toss their pedophilia asses into prison and throw away the key.

Bravo to Perverted Justice and to Dateline for actually making reality television that’s making a difference. Even if the cases were thrown out, these pervs were still arrested. And if nothing else, maybe it’ll scare these fuck-faces into avoiding sex talk with children online because they’re afraid they might wind up having to answer to Chris Hansen.

I wouldn’t say I feel bad for any of these people but keep in mind the chat logs that we are seeing could be completely unrealistic, these people posing could make it seem like they are older but they want to play out a young girl fantasy, ect, ect.. there ae a million ways this show could be making these guys look much worst than it could be in real life… I mean you are in the movie business you are aware of what can be done in the editing room.

I’m just waiting to see Sen. Larry Craig show up on Dateline looking for a 13 year old boy…

“…these people posing could make it seem like they are older but they want to play out a young girl fantasy, ect, ect.. ”

I guess the difference I see is that it doesn’t really matter what the person posing is really doing, i.e, pretending to be an older person who just wants to play out a young girl fantasy, because ultimately, the guy on the other end really believes he is talking to a child. And when he sets up to meet the person posing, he believes that he is going to meet a child.

It does seem to matter since the evidence is not admissible in court.

“It does seem to matter since the evidence is not admissible in court.”

From what you said (I haven’t seen the show), the inadmissibility of the evidence stems from the tactics (not letting the suspect make the first move so to speak, the activitist insisting that they meet, etc and not the fact that a person is pretending to be a young girl or pretending to be an older person wanting to engage in a role playing as a young girl. That distinction is irrelevant if the suspect believes he’s talking to a young girl.

Now if you meant that the suspect believes he’s talking to an older person who wants to engage in fantasy play, that different. But that also isn’t a crime.

here’s the thing, you can ask, prompt, and beg most of the men in the world to fuck a 12 year old girl online and common sense and morals would never allow it. as much as entrapment is wrong, temptation is not, alot of the time when you see the guys on camera with Hanson they find out it’s not their first time trying something like this

I agree 100% with Eric. Keeping in mind that it is a show ( a form of entertainment) and therefore things are edited out for the sake of making it entertaining, I will agree that the show isn’t giving the complete truth with every bit of chat that happened between the decoy and these guys, but it isn’t forcing men to talk to the “kid” online or go to his/her house. THEY make that choice. And they absolutely know before going that the kid is underage… none of them are duped into thinking the person is 18 or older… so they are, indeed, engaging in something they know is illegal.

We don’t know this about this show and that is my point. We have no idea why these guys agreed to meet these girls. 99% of the time I agree with you but in this case the evidence has been tampered with and edited.. who knows what the “real” conversation looks like.

You are right Christopher. You never know. TV edits alot of things. For several reasons, time, entertainment, etc. Because they want their audience to be drawn in. They want their audience to agree with them. Yes these guys are assholes who do this kind of thing and agree to meet a 14 year old girl. But something like this gets thrown out in court on petty issues because protocol was not followed. It wasnt done “legally” and then whats the point? You haven’t gotten a predator off the street. I’ve heard about the organization who handles these “stings” they’ve been on and off in the media for awhile now.

Christine the Lioness spake, and sayeth

Guys, let’s not forgot how many cases get thrown out of court for a gazillion reasons including protocol not being followed by arresting officers, evidence gets tainted, eye witnesses prove unreliable, etc. Hell, you can murder someone in this country and have half the case against you inadmissable because you weren’t Mirandized. It happens. So Why in the world would we hold this outside organization to a higher standard than the legal system. We shouldn’t.

“It wasnt done “legally” and then whats the point?”

Cases that are thrown out for other reasons doesn’t mean the person didn’t commit the crime. Just because a case was thrown out doesn’t imply at all that the person was innocent.

Ivy, you say that there’s no point to the show if they’re not getting predators off the street… and also agree that the producers of the show edit stuff out for entertainment purposes and to draw people in. Well… then you just answered your own question. The reason the network produces this show is to entertain people. That’s why they exist. Ratings = money. The concept of catching pedophiles on t.v. has the same appeal as COPS. People find it intriguing. If they can put some pedophiles away on top of that, then hey… kudos to them. But the convictions are really just a bonus– like in COPS.

And I believe the show probably does make a difference. I do think, however, that at least a few of these guys (after a close call of being caught even if their cases are thrown out) may think twice about acting on those pedophilia desires again. Some will probably do it again anyway but if it scares them enough to keep their perversions in their head instead of acting on them and fucking children, then that makes a huge difference in the life of a child who won’t become that fucktard’s victim.

Christopher: True, we don’t get to see the real conversation fully. But if Perverted Justice’s goal is to get these guys caught and convicted, then surely they know they’ll have to turn over the evidence to the Prosecutor eventually and handing him/her half-ass evidence isn’t going to get them any closer to their goal.

look at the flawed legal system? some of the cases may be dismissed but so were jacko’s cases and oj’s? technicalities are there to police bullshit convictions and charges, but natrually when you make an alottment to save the actual innocent, you will inevitably create loopholes for others, and trust me i know legal loopholes )
