o well as someone who was majoring in education, I just switched out this semester. I can say that it is a series of things but for one we could start with parents who dont care to help their kids do any better. I taught preschool and saw my fair share of uncaring parents and that is so sad. Parents who fight for their kids not be have tests marked in red, and who think that its cute when a child spells however they wish too. Ugh i could go on and on

Ben the Kingpin remarked

Our education system is crapola because it is viewed as a “right” and treated with the same respect that spoiled brats treat their toys–with complete disregard and disinterest.
There was a time when education was something that people had to strive for. They appreciated it. It meant something.
And then, along about 1964 they started dumbing down the education and the testing.
Education these days is not about teaching children–it’s about obtaining tenure and taking summers off.
Oh, there are a few, shining examples–but it’s like any other government (or quasi-government) job, it turns into a welfare system that keeps the bad apples and sends the good ones out into the business world.
“Those who can, do.
Those who can’t, teach.
Those who can’t teach, administrate.
Those who can’t administrate, lobby.
Those who can’t lobby, lead Teacher’s Unions.”

( well now im hurt lol not! my dad says that too my uncle about teaching…. it is a sad day to me too when teachers dont care enough or at all to help kids (especially poor ones or undereducated ones) out of the life they have. I was encouraged to switch out of teaching as my major because I “care too much” yup thats what i was told…can you believe it!?! Because I want to help kids I was told I care too much and shouldnt teach. Responsibility falls on the parents and teachers of young students… some parents teach school like it is a babdysitter… and teachers are in it now just for the summers off… i wonder how many will stop teaching when we start having year round schooling!?! look out its coming
ok im done now lol d

I just want to point out that, yes, the education system in California is screwed, but it’s much more complicated than some are making it. We now live in a society where parents get to decide that even if a teacher holds a child back, they can move him into the next grade despite the fact he doesn’t have the skills to be there and will probably hold the entire class back. I taught for two years and it’s amazing how much one child who doesn’t belong at that level can impede the learning of the rest of the students. There are lots and lots of problems with the system… some are the teachers– the lazy ones who are in it for the summers off, some of the problems come from the lack of interest from the parents, some come from this ridiculous idea that we should bus children from shit neighborhoods to better schools which doesn’t work on any level or benefit anyone… plus a whole other set of issues that I won’t get into… yet. I’ll save that rant for later.

I’d also like to point out that Christopher has an unnatural fascination with Andrew Jackson… he’s one of his favorite historical figures. He made me sit through an entire documentary about him… -)

parents stop blaming the teachers…teachers stop blaming their highter ups….students stop putting all the blame ontheir parents and teachers. And ya know what else is sad…that teachers dont even have enough books fortheir classrooms anymore… (

Andrew Jackson rocks, and I’m fucking serious.. even Christine thought he was quite a character…. a real man’s man. As for schools maybe we should just educate the weathly kids from good neighborhoods and concentrate on them extra hard and the hell with the poor neighborhoods, maybe just cage em up and let them have the hood. I’m sick of deal with people who can’t even speak english… ~X(

As for California.. it is the most giant fuck up of a state in the world when it comes to education we spend 52 billion a year on our system and kids don’t have books, 52 billion is much larger then many countries GDP, I think we need to start by cutting out teacher unions and start cutting the fat..

d itsalla bout society andhow we treat these kids…if we had as much faith in the “poor kids” as we do “the wealthy kids” we would be better off…. im always amazed when i see the story of a “poor kid” who grew up pushing him or herself to go to school and did it allto have a better life then they grew up with ya know!?!

Katie, that is an idealistic point of view.. the fact is many people have tons of faith in poor kids, that is really all they have going for them, kids from better areas do better because they have better parents, less stress, ect.. we can’t fix the world but it is probably in this countries best interest to focus on teh best and the brightest and quit trying to make everybody equal, simply i’m never going to be as good a writer as Christine and she will never be as good as I am at Raquetball no matter what.. poor kids are mostly on average going to do worst then the non poor kids, the ones that are special will rise to the top of the barrell anyway and make something of themselves.. I’m talking about the averages it’s a giant waste of money for California to focus on Los Angeles Unified school district and all their problems when there are plenty of areas that are depribed that have good students, the poor ghettos of the country hold back the rest of the kids.

The problem that Christopher doesn’t understand is that if we just say “to hell” with the pooor kids, the poor kids will become criminals and rob, rape, and murder the rest of us. Christopher complains constantly about how these uneducated people don’t help themselves and live off the welfare system, but if we’re not going to give them the foundation they need to actually be self-sufficient, we can hardly blame them when they aren’t able to do that.

The poor ghettos hold back every kid… not just “the rest.” Every child deserves to have an education that’s worth a damn… and if we aren’t going to provide minimally that as a society, then it’s hard to hold them responsible for being uneducated, unable to find employment, and living off the rest of us for the rest of their lives.

Last time I checked shit has only gotten worst, not a whole lot better.. the world just isn’t ever going to be ok for some people.. there are plenty of people in and out of the hood who help themselves and make a succesful life for themself, the one thign the people in hood arn’t lacking is a foundation to be succesful pllllleeeezee they make do everythign in their power to fuck up what foundation is there.. but it is there.

We do provide and education there are choices, but it’s only getting worst and we aren’t fixing the problems, we arn’t stopping illigals from comming in and making it more impossible we arn’t holding kids accountable, we do things like dumbing down the SATS because they are “racist” RIGHT…. last time I check 4+4 = 8 no matter what nationality you are. I just feel it’s the ghetto society, they would rather live off welfair drivig their lexus truck live in a fucking whole and sell crack then work hard and get an education and do something contructive.. is that all people in the hood HELL NO.. is it the majority.. probalbly.. this plays true for all walks of life, is everybody in Redondo Beach white and educationed.. NOPE.. but the majority are. The cream always rises to the top and bricks always sink to the bottom, I just happen to think the ghettos are a place where there are many more bricks and there is probably nothing we could possibly do to fix it.. and even if we could, is it worth the money and effort when we could just make the average students in say the suburbs exceptional students with that same money.. isn’t that really the type of thinking we need in order to keep the United States as a super power?

) well lets see I do think we all deserve an education I also believe for the beginning of life it is our parents responsibility to instill how important education is… and then its in our hands… like I said I have seen both sides…and know enough to also know that the “upper class” whom expect things take their education for granted ..they take it for granted that they can afford to go to great schools…and dont appreciate it…ya know!?!

Christopher the Pyro got all philosophical

Ya know, I grew up in pretty low income household, I didn’t do without, but my parents beat into my head that school and not fucking around was important. I wasn’t the perfect student like Christine, but I did ok but even now I spend my days reading shit that makes me smarter .. (hopefully):-?

Eitherway the point is, it’s a parents responsiblity and if a parent does a good job the child will flurish if not, they won’t no matter what we do.

d / well christopher i would agree with you ..in most cases that would be true….some people just believe that as long as you have a trade, can hustle or whatever you will be fine… (

January 12th, 2006

Christine the Lioness said this

Katie made a good point… it starts with parents instilling in their kids the importance of an education. I’m not surprised Christopher wasn’t a perfect student… -) … and yes, I was a straight A… but what did we have in common? Both of our parents made education a priority. I was never given a choice as to whether I would go to college or not… my choice was which college are you going to go to? So it never crossed my mind that I would have the option of not doing well in school. But not all kids get that from their parents… some rich parents teach their kids they can buy their way out of doing well and studying… some ghetto parents teach their kids that they should focus on becoming NBA stars instead of learning to read… we simply can’t hold kids accountable when they aren’t given the guidance they need to learn how to make the right decisions for themselves. I hold the parents accountable. But if you listen to Christopher, he thinks all parents are so great… they just aren’t. If they were, then you wouldn’t see kids bringing guns to school, or flunking out, or becoming addicts. It’s when kids are left to their own devices that those things happen… if they are supervised and taught well, they grow up believing what they are taught.

I was taught at home.
I was taught that learning and education where the mark of a gentleman and encouraged to be a scholar.
I never considered there was a time to stop learning–not after the school bell, not during the summers, not over vacations. Never.
Our whole system teaches children to turn off their desire to learn. And since the current generation of parents were products of that system, I don’t expect them to even have the basic understanding of how to encourage scholarship in their children.

January 12th, 2006

Christine the Lioness stated

I agree totally, Ben.

Not that I’m an advocate of home schooling… I’ve known a couple of people who were home-schooled, and while they are very intelligent and capabale, they do– still to this day– have socialization issues. Not everyone is wonderful at dealing with people… but I think part of why I’m pretty good with people (at least I’ve been told that– even from Christopher if you can believe he actually gave me a compliment ;-)) is because I moved to a different school every year until I was nine years old and it really taught me that I could go into any situation alone and be confident that I could meet people and make friends. Maybe the same outcome could have happened if I were homeschooled, but I believe whichever path you choose, you are giving up something to gain something else.

But I think we all agree that the love of lifelong learning and the importance of getting an education starts with parents. And yes… when you have a bunch of parents who are a product of a messed up system living in a culture that’s all about instant gratification, those values are much more rare than they used to be.

Ben, I totally feel you, Christine told me I needed to get rid of my T.V because I wasn’t paying enough attention to her.. and I of course refused.. (because that is fucking insane) so she cut the fucking cable wire comming into my house.. so now I’m suck without cable today…

January 13th, 2006

Ben the Kingpin thought this

I realized that television was dominating my life about six years ago. I cancelled my cable (Do you realize how hard it is to do that?! It’s almost as bad as trying to cancel a credit card!) and we only use the TV for movies, now. I realized I was coming home from work, planting myself in front of the TV, vaguely aware of some little creatures crossing between me and the screen from time to time (my kids) and a taller one who mostly left me alone, but made me feel guilty about it. I’d stay up too late watching crap and get up too late for work because of it. Finally, I had enough and I just pulled the plug.
In the time savings in the first two years, I wrote a book.
Now, I’m addicted to movies, however… )
(Though I’m working on several books…)

Christine the Lioness got all philosophical

Hehe… Ben, I think you and I are opposites… all I ever do is write (which makes sense since it’s how I make my living), but I have a beautiful big-screen plasma t.v. and a cable package that costs me an arm and a leg… and I don’t think I turn it on more than once a month. I don’t even know what channels correspond with which stations.

The ONLY time my t.v. is on is when Christopher brings over a dvd… usually of some really popular show like Sopranos or LOST that we completely missed when it actually aired. I guess when you write for television, you rarely have time to see what your competition is up to. -)

Ben the Kingpin said this

And when I write, I design worlds, develop cultures and create societies.
Television is anathema to me–and yet I’m drawn to it like a moth to flame.
(I’d like to think that I’m only drawn to the truly interesting cultural elements, but if I see a woman in stockings and heels wearing a bustier, I’m agog until she’s off the screen. *sigh*)

Heck, if it weren’t for the fact that the sheets are in the dryer and the kids are watching a movie with us, I’d be urging the good lady-wife to take a “nap” with me right now!
